Lawn Renovations

If you're a homeowner who cares about the aesthetic value of your home, you're probably familiar with the importance of lawn maintenance. However, there are crucial aspects of lawn care that often get overlooked. A few of these include dethatching, aeration, overseeding/reseeding, pre and post emergent treatments, and comprehensive fertilization programs. A high-level lawn requires a high level of knowledge, expertise, and attention.

In this comprehensive guide, we will share the important steps and techniques so that you will have the knowledge to renovate your lawn and elevate the beauty of your outdoor living space.

Lawn Renovation Principle #1

Scalping

The first and easiest of the steps for lawn renovations is scalping. It is quite simple and a bit self-explanatory. Lawn Scalping is when you mow your lawn to the lowest possible level to shock and stunt your current turf in order to allow your new choice grass seed cultivars the opportunity to germinate and take hold of the soil which we will prepare and condition in the following steps.

Lawn Renovation Principle #2

Lawn Dethatching

Every year, as it grows, turf grass accumulates a layer of thatch at its base which builds and compacts blocking the roots from receiving oxygen, water, and nutrients. This leads to suffocation and discoloration in your lawn. Fortunately it is not complicated to solve this problem.

For small lawns all you have to do is take a stiff leaf rake and thoroughly rake your lawn in at least 2 directions. You will yellow and fluffy dead debris begin to surface, you may surprise how much dead material comes out! Even after scalping!

For larger lawns it is very helpful to rent a gas power rake at your local large home improvement store or hire a local professional who already owns the equipment.

Dethatching your lawn will allow your lawn to breathe and receive more water and oxygen. And if a power rake was used on your lawn, it will have scarified your soil creating an ideal environment for excellent soil to seed contact for the overseeding step.

Lawn Renovation Principle #4

Lawn Base & Leveling

The following step is far more simple but equally as important as aeration, and that is the application of topsoil or lawn base.    This new addition of fine soil is going to do 2 major things.
The most obvious benefit is that it will help to level your lawn so that you don't have to deal with high or low spots when you are mowing your lawn which is very important when trying to achieve an even dark emerald, green color in your lawn.
You're going to need just a few things to get this done.
First is the truck or trailer to haul the soil. you could alternatively buy soil by the bag at your local gardening store though this tends to be more expensive and may not be ideal for medium to large sized lawns.
Next you're going to want a wheel barrow, a stiff rake, and most importantly a lawn leveling rake which typically run from $80.00-$120.00 depending on the size you pick. this tool is very important because it will eliminate low or high spots in your lawn and soil eliminating spot scalping when mowing allowing an even color and cut after each mow.

Lawn Renovation Principle #5

Pre-Emergent Weed Prevention

When all the hard work has been done it feels like we have done what is necessary to have a beautiful emerald, green lawn. Unfortunately this is where many omit a make it or break it step.

We are now at a decisive moment of either vulnerability or exuberant lawn growth.

We are feeling satisfied of our labor and just about ready to apply seed and fertilizer. And this is why it is so easy and common to skip the following essential step. This step can make or break all of your efforts.

   Germination friendly pre-emergent lawn treatment!

Pre-emergent treatments generally prevent unwanted weeds from sprouting. Unfortunately, they also prevent grass seed from germinating. Fortunately for you we've discovered a pre-emergent that is specifically engineered to prevent weeds and allow turf grass seed germination! Furthermore, I am about to share the product with you!

Mesotrione/Meso4sc has been around for several years now though it is not commonly used by lawn care professionals due to it's high cost. Here at Royalty Lawn Service LLC we have determined to take no short cuts and spare no expense in order to provide for you the very best results currently possible. This specialized preemergent prevents unwanted weeds and grasses from germinating while allowing our choice cultivar seeds to freely sprout and take advantage of the ideal soil environment we have prepared.

Lawn Renovation Principle #6

Overseeding & Fertilization

What is Lawn Aeration?

Lawn aeration is the process of creating holes in the soil to allow far better air, water, and nutrient circulation. The holes created by aeration can be anywhere from 2-6 inches deep and spaced 2-6 inches apart. This process can be done manually or with specialized equipment, such as a core aerator.
